James River
Driving Association
The
James River Driving Association (JRDA) is a horse and carriage driving club with members primarily from
The primary goal of the JRDA is the basic education of existing and potential ‘whips” (carriage drivers) by introducing safe driving practices, vehicle care and maintenance, and driving techniques. Members are encouraged to utilize the experience and expertise of the active members to learn more about what is involved in driving and to further develop their opinions and preferences before purchasing horses or equipment.
OWNING A HORSE AND CARRIAGE IS NOT REQUIRED FOR MEMBERSHIP! The JRDA welcomes all individuals and includes many different levels of interest, knowledge and experience. Some members are carriage collectors; some drive light horses or ponies; others drive draft breeds. Most members are primarily interested in pleasure driving, yet many members have competed successfully in Driving Shows and Combined Driving Events.
The club provides its members with a variety of activities. An informative newsletter announces club and regional shows and activities as well as the regular meetings. Driving-related advertising is included; members may place ads free of charge. Club meetings are hosted by members and allow for the conduct of business and the presentation of programs on driving and related subjects. Pleasure drives are held monthly during most of the year; clinics and field trips round out the calendar. The club also has driving-related DVDs available for loan to club members.
