Who we are The James River Driving Association is a horse-and-carriage driving club with members primarily from Richmond, Virginia, and the surrounding areas. The JRDA began as an idea between friends who desired to seek out others with a common interest in driving horse-drawn vehicles. The members first met formally June 1984. The primary goal of the driving club is the basic education of existing and potential "whips," also knows as carriage drivers, by introducing safe driving practices, vehicle care and maintenance, and driving techniques. Members are encouraged to utilize the experience and expertise of the active members to learn more about what is involved in driving to develop further their opinions and preferences before purchasing horses or equipment. Owning a horse and carriage is not a requirement for membership. The JRDA welcomes all individuals and includes many different levels of interest. Some members are carriage collectors; some drive light horses or ponies, and others drive draft breeds. Most members primarily are interested in pleasure driving, yet many members compete successfully in driving shows and combined driving events. The club provides its members with a variety of activities, including monthly meetings at members' homes, pleasure drives, clinics and field trips. The club also maintains driving-related videotapes in a lending library for members. Join us at one of our drives.
